If unsure about files, I generally set NTFS permissions to Deny all accounts the ability to execute. If, after reboot, everything seems fine, you have your cuplrit. If permissions get changed back, you have multiple files/processes checking on each other.

I use Windows 2000. After I loaded the MS updates (Service Pack 4), MS Internet Explorer keeps popping up with an ad to prevent pop ups.

I found this running on both Window ME and 98. The indications were that Internet Explorer was not working. When activating IE, an hourglass would appear and then go away and IE would not open. On the ME system, I found an actual folder named CXTPLS in Program Files and it had an uninstaller. Problem solved. On the Win98 system, the file was in a C:\TEMP folder and would not allow deletion. Restarted to command prompt, went to C:\temp folder and deleted file. Problem solved.
